On February 1, 1927, The Royal Hawaiian opened its doors as the first luxury resort in Waikiki, ushering in a new era of upscale travel to the Hawaiian Islands. Set on 14 acres of the iconic Waikiki beachfront along Oahu’s south shore, the resort quickly earned a reputation as a preferred destination for international royalty and discerning travelers alike.
During World War II, the resort was leased exclusively to the U.S. Navy, serving as a rest and relaxation center for service members. In 1947, following an extensive renovation, The Royal Hawaiian reopened and swiftly reclaimed its status as an elite retreat, attracting Hollywood celebrities, world leaders, and affluent guests from around the globe.
In 1969, the resort expanded with the addition of the Mailani Tower, a modern high-rise featuring all oceanfront rooms, each with a private lanai offering sweeping views of the Pacific.
Now part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, The Royal Hawaiian—fondly known as “The Pink Palace of the Pacific”—continues to blend timeless elegance with modern luxury. While the resort has been thoughtfully updated throughout the decades, its signature pink façade, distinctive Spanish-Moorish architecture, and refined historic touches preserve the spirit of its glamorous past.
